Shaw Chaplaincy Institute

I have completed two Clinical Pastoral Education units with the Shaw Chaplaincy Institute under Rev. Dr. Laure Garret-Cobbina and Rev. Paul Gaffney. In fall of 2021 I will embark on a third unit (4 CPE units required to become a Board Certified Chaplain).

My work has brought me to a deeper awareness of myself and a multiplicity of faith traditions.

Providing Care During a Pandemic

My second unit of Clinical Pastoral Education was a year-long program with a focus on remote spiritual care. Through the Covid-19 pandemic to today, I provide care for congregants over the phone and computer. I have learned how to hold space for rituals, memorials, and remembrances within a digital environment.

Laguna Honda Hospital

I began my CPE training by merging my work as a spiritual care provider and a Medical Clown at Laguna Honda Hospital, San Francisco. I studied the intersectionality of laughter, hope, healing, and chaplaincy. I worked with the memory care units connecting through song, story, and religious practices.

Medical Clown Project

As a medical clown for numerous years, I provide therapeutic clowning as an integrated component of care for adult and pediatric patients and their families. This work is profoundly meaningful and life-giving to me and the folks I serve. In fact, this year I agreed to join the Board of Directors as vice-president.
